I need a hero! - Jane's Firemen

Today, the very lovely Jane Linfoot joins me on the hot seat, to talk about heroes, and I believe she has made us an educational list of reasons why we should like Firemen. (As if we needed one!)

Jane writes fun, flirty fiction, with feisty heroines and a bit of an edge. She lives with her family and pets in Derbyshire, and loves hearts, flowers, happy endings and all things vintage.

My Kind Of Hero...Jane Linfoot’s Illustrated A–Z of Hot Firemen

So when did I become a FFF (firm fireman fan)? It could have been when I noticed them stripping off in the car park down the road, doing water training exercises in the River Derwent. Or it may have been when the fire chief in our writing group wrote about his adventures, and I thought, well, if you have to go, there are worse ways than expiring in the arms of a super-capable fireman. Then once a friend down the road had two tenders, a cherry picker, and the entire blue watch in her garden when a kitten went up her pine tree – that was an enjoyable day. Or maybe, just maybe, it was when I saw all those mouth watering pics on Facebook...

Picture
But my big excuse to talk about firemen is because they do get a few mentions in my next book, High Heels & Bicycle Wheels. It’s mainly about summer and camper vans and beaches, but the hot cyclist hero, Jackson is always teasing heroine Bryony about her penchant for firemen...no secret where that came from then.

So here’s my little Illustrated A–Z of Hot Firemen...and thank you Wendy for hours of hard work sorting out the pretty pics.

And maybe just to put us in the mood for hot cyclists, like High Heels & Bicycle Wheels hero Jackson, I’ll hand over to Wendy again for one last pic....

High Heels & Bicycle Wheels - out July 17th

Meet Bryony: She's a fun-loving, very single TV production assistant whose idea of sport is the Jimmy Choo sales scrum
Meet Jackson: Cycling's bad boy superstar. Injured and out of racing this summer, without his training he's looking for another distraction.
Bryony's facing a triple whammy – her last single friend just named the day, her mother's offering to have her eggs frozen, and the guy she's loved from afar, forever, just got hitched. So she's more than happy to accept the offer of a totally out of character but seriously steamy one night of no-strings fun. Especially when the guy in question is so attractive he even looks good in Lycra!
Jackson's on the look out for a new career but if the opportunity to work on TV means a fortnight with the most uptight woman in the world, he'd rather not bother. He never goes in for seconds – and who in their right mind would head off in a camper van with a woman who irons her knickers? Add in a tandem (yes, a tandem) and fast forward to double trouble for a summer neither of them will ever forget!

I need a hero! - Lori's heroes

The wonderful Lori Connelly has agreed to take a little time out of her life and talk to me about her heroes. Lori?

Although cowboys have a special part in my heart, my heroes have always been ordinary people. When I’m down, and another storm is about to rain down misery, I need a hero I can relate to, someone as imperfect as I am. Super people who are raising perfect children while attending college full time, working three jobs, helping the homeless, lost puppies and whales, never arguing with their spouse, possessing excellent health, keeping an immaculate house, yard, and vegetable garden, and so on, all at once, discourage me.

Ordinary men and women who cope with stress, the failing health of a parent, the death of a loved one, health challenges, smart aleck children, accidents, and financial strain, imperfectly are my heroes. They have bad days, crying jags, snap at people who don’t deserve it, but they work through it, surpassing survival to success. Their journeys aren’t perfect or pretty, but they keep working to make life a little better. Through them, I see possibilities and gain hope. Knowing people like that, both personally and reading of others, reminds me that if one person can accomplish something, another can. I can.

In my books, I create characters that are my idea of hero material, ordinary people, flawed but working to overcome obstacles to achieve their happiness.

For example in The Outlaw of Cedar Ridge, disappointments, failures and grief have seeped Ben in bitterness. When he’s given the opportunity to turn his life around, save his marriage to Evie, the man isn’t perfect but he has the heart to
try. That’s why he’s one of my heroes.

Lori was born and still lives in Oregon. Despite being a good student, her teachers complained about her tendency to daydream. The tales dancing through her imagination were frequently far more entertaining than real life. As far back as she can remember, Lori made up stories, to calm her sister after a nightmare, entertain herself in boring classes, writing in countless notebooks, many never again to see the light of day. She earned a BS from Eastern Oregon State College and married her best friend almost twenty years ago. She has three brilliant, handsome sons, one amazing daughter-in-law, a beautiful granddaughter and two spoiled dogs. When she isn't writing, Lori loves to read, hike, camp, rock hound, and take long walks with her husband just after it rains.

I need a hero! - Angela loves Superman.

Angela Campbell is joining me today to tell us why Superman is her hero.

It’s true. Superman is my ideal superhero.

I’m pretty sure I must have been about 9 or 10 the first time I saw “Superman: The Movie.” We had just gotten HBO, which was super awesome and very rare back in the early 80s, and it was the first movie my mother allowed me to watch on the channel.

I snuggled up on the end of the sofa with my faithful sidekick, an orange and white tabby cat named George, and stared in awe at the television for two hours.

Christopher Reeve made that wide-eyed little girl that I was truly believe a man could fly. And if a man could fly, surely a man could do anything, right? I'm convinced CR and Superman opened my imagination wide that day and it never really shut.

Yes, I found a red towel and pretended it was my cape and kept jumping off the sofa trying to fly like Supergirl until I eventually hurt myself, but a seed was planted in my heart that day that took root and grew as I grew older. The worlds I created in my mind...the characters and the scenes...

I’m very glad Superman was a good, solid, old-fashioned type of hero, because I kind of adopted him as a role model and have never let go. Besides my dad, who was a police officer, Superman was the first hero I was exposed to. Superman is strong, can fly, and swoops in and saves people when they need it most.

Picture
It doesn’t matter which actor has played him — I personally have liked them all and whoa, mama, talk about gorgeous — it’s always been Superman’s character I admire.

And yes, yes, I know. A lot of people call Superman a lame superhero because he always does the right thing, which makes him snoozapalooza boring or something. To those people, I say, seriously?!? Doing the right thing isn’t heroic enough for you? Wow. No wonder this world has gone hell-in-a-handbasket crazy. It’s like we live in a world that doesn’t value integrity or something. Shesh.

As for me, I’ll take the big blue Boy Scout over the Dark Knight any day. So, tell us. Who is your favorite superhero?

Thanks Angela. Angela has produced 3 books in the last year: Cry Wolf, On The Scent, and Something Wicked. She's putting me to shame! And I do believe there is another one due out any minute, but you didn't hear that from me!
