But I digress. My cautionary tale this week is about letting your husband loose with an idea...
It started with me parking up in the field while my sons trotted off to their football training and I whipped out my Kindle to settle in. Only then did I remember my glasses were a bit mucky and so I pulled out a lens wipe to clean them. But when I came to putting them back on, I realised the right lens was swirly. I took them off again and turned it to the light and a rainbow of circles could be seen all across the surface. Something gritty must have been on the lens when I wiped it. Disaster! I could just about see through them, so I managed to read, don't panic, but when I got home, I showed them to my husband (who thinks I should clean them more often!) "I know," he said. "I have an idea," took the glasses and disappeared into his man-cave (the garage) for 2 hours. Yes, I said 2 hours!
At one point I went out and he looked stressed. "Which one was it you scratched," he said. "The right," said I. "Oh," he said and switched to the other lens. He was attempting to polish the scratch away with his modelling Dremel and some cloths (He does Airfix! *sympathy accepted*). I asked 'would this not affect the dioptre of the lenses?' "Shut up," he said and I slunk away. You see I was already resigned to having ruined them, so my stress was gone, so I smiled and wandered back in.
At the end of the two hours he shuffled back in. "I think I've made them worse," he said apologetically. Bless him, he did try, but the edges were a bit hazy and the center, on the wonk. "I'll get some new glasses," I told him and thanked him for trying. Needless to say the woman at Boots the Opticians got a giggle out of the story and my husband, though in town, declined to join me on my quest. So as I battle with my heavy, un-thinned, non-anti-reflection coated spare pair to continue writing, think of me and learn from my tale. Dremels and lenses don't mix - too jazzy!
